August 25, 2023by EAEST0

In 2022, new energy storage deployments in European households reached about 5.7 GWh, a 147.6% increase year-over-year. Cumulative deployments reached 11.1 GWh, a 105.2% increase. Germany and Italy saw the largest deployments, reaching 1.54 GWh and 1.1 GWh respectively. Deployments in Germany exceeded 1 GW, with 200,000 households choosing to install systems. Italy exceeded 500 MW, but demand is expected to weaken as the Superbonus subsidy program is phased out.

In 2022, 2 GW of front-of-the-meter energy storage was added in Europe, accounting for 44% and initial scale. The UK accounted for 42%, leading the large-scale storage market. The July 2023 European electricity reforms, establishing capacity markets and improving revenue models, will provide support for large-scale storage growth. From 2023-2025, energy storage deployments in Europe are expected to increase significantly.
