It is reported that major German industrial companies are urging Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government to announce its carbon capture and storage (CCS) strategy by the end of this year. In recent years, this technology has faced criticism in Germany and even globally, but now the German government is reconsidering it, as Germany may fail to achieve its current target of net zero by 2045.
With extreme weather becoming more frequent, the threat of global warming is more pressing, and public support for new technologies has shifted dramatically. Large companies stand to benefit, with some already selected in July to receive EU innovation funding. Although the government has promised to consult stakeholders before amending laws, consultation takes time and the Economics Ministry may be unable to publish its CCS strategy by year-end.
